let me get a list here:

- copernicus no kokyuu — violent, disturbing, also sexual in nature so. forewarned.
- gunjou — violent and suspenseful, also with sexual themes. that's kind of part and parcel with a lot of this genre, oops.
- hideout — horror, surreal, suspense.
- hone ga kusaru made — horror, thriller. i don't remember a lot about the plot but it was super bingeable, that's my review.
- any suehiro maruo works (though it's all more guro than horror but it fluctuates), his art is so fantastic.
- and now come get some candy

This is a tired answer but Death Note! I don't consume a lot of horror/suspense media in general, but I do remember watching & reading Death Note and it being really good. I should try it out again lol.

hello fellow junji itou enjoyer we will make it to october of 2022 for the new uzumaki adaptation

so i've got three?? four recs

on the light side i always love to nudge ghost hunt at people--no, it's not that anime with the wild dub track. it's a lil light novel series with a short anime about a totally ordinary girl who ends up working for a world-renowned paranormal investigator who happens to be a huge jerk and a teenage boy :D the cast is fun and lovable, and the stories range from little bits of suspenseful levity to being chock full of dead kids and references to carmilla

on the gory side i enjoyed bio meat. in the future japan's created these weird little... food creatures called bio-meat which eat any organic material and don't feel pain so it's a totally normal and ethical food source.

and then their containment facility gets damaged :D they eat any organic material. it has a neat sequel manga where america has the same idea, but worse!

third rec is mononoke, which is just... an incredibly beautiful fever dream of a show where the mysterious medicine seller tries to determine what demon is mucking a place by figuring out its shape, truth, and reason. nobody tells the whole truth and the animation is absolutely gorgeous.

bonus side rec that i haven't watched but keep meaning to, yamishibai. looks like a bunch of short paperdoll style spookum stories.

🎃 Fuan No Tane was recommended to me by a friend, and it has become one of my favorite horror series of all time!! It's a ton of shorts that all follow the theme of the build up of fear before it abruptly ends, hence "Seeds of Anxiety," and it's very Junji Ito-ish.

🎃 I collected the Scarred and Method decks because the cards kept catching my eye in RA, so I looked up the series. It's called "Goth." It's only like five or six chapters, I think, very short, but it's good. It isn't horror spooky so much as disturbing and a tad violent. Pre-emptive TW for suicide if that isn't your jam.

🎃 I've never read the Shiki manga (I should), but I did enjoy the anime! It's about vampires.

🎃 Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen isn't what most people would call spooky, I guess, but both of them have some really eerie moments to me, especially in the later half of the series! Both of them can get pretty violent and disturbing, too.

🎃 Shin Sekai Yori is extremely slow burn spooky/violent. It's mostly thriller/psychological, but it's good if you don't find that too boring and off-putting!

🎃 Kurozuka is a pretty obscure, cool show about Japanese vampire mythos with romance involved, but it's definitely an acquired taste. It's fantasy sci-fi and kind of violent.

🎃 FINALLY, lol, my last rec is if you like BL/yaoi and manhwa! It's called The Black Mirror. I went feral and binge read it in two days...... LMAO. It kept me on the edge of my seat because of the horror and suspsense, but it's got sex scenes in it, some of them dubcon, so definitely don't read it out in the open or if you aren't into that.
Edited (wait i was confusing yoko kanno for shiki but yoko did terror in resonance.... gomen) 2021-10-16 02:12 (UTC)

I don't watch a lot of horror; however, there's some that just stick out for me

My go-to recommendation Ghost Hunt has been mentioned. But it's my absolute favorite. Even the opening has a great spooky vibe to it. The series is fun, and varies from actually a bit spooky, to sweet, to this may not be haunted.

I also really liked Another and it's basically haunted class. Gruesome deaths. And by gruesome I mean you may never look at umbrella the same.

And...I also really loved Parasyte -- both the anime and manga. About an earth where parasitic creatures take over human bodies. The MC is a guy who successfully stops his and now it only has his hand. It's really not just pure "horror" despite spooky elements, it has a lot of what you'd see in seinen series, too.

And -- candy from me!

i will list a few that i liked:

promised neverland has a good unsettling vibe and leans very hard on the psychological horror; i've heard the second season is pretty bad though, anime-wise but that the manga is much better for capturing some things, too.

parasyte is also good and unsettling, has some nice body horror as well. the characters in it are also just very good.

also if you're into watching movies, perfect blue is honestly pretty terrifying and deals with a lot of realism re: idols and the horrors regarding that industry. also a lot of surrealism and very good shots

jigoku shoujo/hell girl is also good; there's a lot of episodes for it but a lot of them are standalone for the most part and share their own miniature horrors.

rampo kitan: game of laplace is a mystery but has a LOT of horror elements in it -- there's a killer who turns their victims into "furniture" so to speak, as a reference.

and here is my post!

I always liked Pet Shop of Horrors back in the day, it's a very pretty manga! Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni is also a classic.

I think you've already hit up my post.

While not really a horror, Psycho Pass is a psychological thriller series that I really enjoy. It can also be pretty unsettling and gory at times. Have a Happy Halloween!!!

I have to admit, I'm a weenie when it comes to horror or suspense. I haven't even seen the horror 'classic' movies.

So a weenie trick or treat, lol.

Some horror manga I liked:

- Ibitsu: Guy encounters a weird gothic lolita who asks if he wants a little sister. When he says yes, bad things ensue. Content warnings: gore, sexual abuse/assault (iirc), body horror.
- Fuan no Tane: A three volume short story collection about various monsters. When I say short, I mean short; most stories aren't longer than 10 pages long. Content warning: body horror.
- Mieruko-chan: Horror-comedy about a girl who wakes up one day to see monsters and her reaction to them is I Pretend I Do Not See. Got an anime recently too! Content warning: body horror.
- Zekkyou Gakkyuu: A sort of shoujo horror, another short story collection all told by a little demon/ghost girl named Yomi. Definitely more light, but also fairly spooky. Content warning: I can't think of anything for this one... Mild body horror?
- Chi no Wadachi: the least out and out "horror" of this list, it's just a manga about a dude and his totally normal not at all fucked up mom. Content warnings: Severe incesty vibes, psychological horror.

I saw that Angels of Death was mentioned above and I would like to say that I did only watch the anime and enjoyed it quite a bit. There's just something very deviantart about it that speaks to me.

That said, my recommendation is "My Name Is Boy A". There is the theme of child sexual abuse, as a boy protects his friend from a predatory teacher and has to deal with twists and turns in the wake of the tragedy.

First off, you had me at Cinnamoroll! Second, while I absolutly love horror more then any genre... I... I really dont know too many manga/anime series that I liked from start to end that are considered horror (sans some iconics like Berserk and such.. but thats like I guess horror..)

Bradherley no Basha - Im gonna clarify this isnt spooky/gorey, its just depressing/disturbing. The last one is why I posted it. One of those comics that always sticks with me and tbh I've read it a few times. Uh, its very NC-17 in topic though.

Now softer stuff

Dragon Head - Was pretty fun. One of those "world goes to shit: day 01" type series, characters trying to survive after a horrific event. Ending kinda mmm me, but I always love the build up to these type of comics, and I often think about it when I'm on a train.

Hakaijuu - In the same catagory as the one above, Though I will be honest I didn't finish it. I did enjoy the majority of it and the parts I did read though.

BioMeat; Nectar - This is one of the few I did like till the end, but because It didnt stray too far. TL;DR Headcrabs make good Beyond Burgers.

Also I guess Kazuo Umezz is a guy I usually reccomend to those whom like Junji Ito. Very shoujo in style, he has pretty iconic stuff! Kid me loves him, so yes. 14 *aka Chicken George* is a beautiful comic that is also like really weird. Especially mid series where every chapter is just "wait what series is this again?"

Sorry horrible recs; the site I normally used for my stuff is down so I was going off memory haha. Uh should have asked me for Game and Movies RIP. But yes! Also here is my candy!

Mononoke is a bit unconventional as a horror series, but it's one of the best that I've seen. It's an artistic masterpiece with beautiful storytelling and writing, and it manages to be unsettling without being gory or disgusting.

I also like Jigoku Shoujo, which is also an episodic anime - it's very well written though! I enjoy it quite a bit. Both of these are old bc I rarely watch anime anymore, I apologize...

hello fellow junji ito enjoyer!
i saw someone recommend fuan no tane already, so i gotta second that. i also really enjoy naoki urusawa's monster; definitely more suspense, but also goes into some pretty horrific topics. also not exactly horror, but oyasumi punpun deeply unsettled me

Trick or Treat!

Well... horror isn't actually a genre I have dug into much with anime/manga but did a quick look under the genre to see if I know of anything that counts. I remember really enjoying Blood+ when I watched it years ago. I don't remember a TON other then I thought some of the concepts were particularly interesting to me.

Here is my candy post!
